Malik Monk

The Lakers have amazing depth at shooting guard. Obviously, freedom of action must be taken into account. Malik Monk is set to become a free agent in the offseason. However, letting a 24-year-old potential boyfriend walk away without getting anything in return seems like a fool’s errand. The Lakers should try to re-sign Monk.

And then they have to get rid of it.

He is not a necessity in a team. But adding him to a potential Russell Westbrook deal could be useful. Or including it in another deal is also plausible. Interest in Monk should be given his age and previous pedigree.

Talen Horton-Tucker

Talen Horton-Tucker took part in the distant too many trading rumors at 21. The first thing you will find when you google his name is a lot of different trade offers and rumors. This is because it has a high ceiling and a relatively low cost in terms of contract.

In Los Angeles, there is also no clear fit for him.

No Lakers player has been as connected to Russell Westbrook as Horton-Tucker. In fact, Horton-Tucker is the X factor when it comes to the Westbrook deal. If the team really wants him, they may have to take on Westbrook and his huge contract.

The Lakers should capitalize on his stock and trade him while they can. Talen Horton-Tucker could be the ticket to the Lakers’ turnaround next season. Its trading value is vital to the future of the team.

Russell Westbrook

Shocking, right? But let’s get to the bottom of why the Lakers need to be aggressive on the trade front as soon as possible.

During the 2021-2022 season up until the trade deadline, there were rumors of a deal for Russell Westbrook. It is clear that nothing happened.

But if Los Angeles can trade Westbrook at the start of the summer, they’ll have plenty of time to study the free-agent market and fill the roster with younger players.

That’s where it all comes in. Adding Monk and/or Horton-Tucker to the Russell-Westbrook-led package would be key to closing the deal. Los Angeles will likely have to sign as well, but Westbrook must leave.

Can Westbrook still be a valuable player in the NBA? Yes.

But for now, a split would be in the interest of both the Lakers and Westbrook. They both need a fresh start after the disastrous 2021-2022 NBA season.

Final Thoughts

The Lakers have a lot of work to do this summer. They can’t afford a repeat of last season. Any team that has both LeBron James and Anthony Davis on it will have a chance to win. However, it remains to be seen if the Los Angeles front office can add the necessary elements around the star duo.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo
