This underrated Spider-Man movie just hit Netflix’s top 10.
The list of the top 10 Netflix movies is usually dominated by new releases. That’s why it’s no surprise that films like Hustle, Interceptor and Senior Year are featured in the rankings, but an amazing movie made its way into the rankings and features everyone’s favorite webhead.
The Amazing Spider-Man is currently in fifth place and even briefly held the top spot earlier this month. Over the past two weeks, the film has racked up over 22 million hours of viewing. It definitely says that the underrated comic book movie is getting some serious interest from Netflix subscribers.
Released in 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man was a reboot of the franchise after Sam Raimi’s trilogy ended with 2007’s Spider-Man 3. It stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as his lover Gwen Stacy. Directed by Mark Webb, the film retells the popular superhero’s origin story and then sees Spidey come face to face with Dr. Curt Connors, also known as the Lizard.
The film was a box office success, grossing over $750 million worldwide, but was not such a hit with comic book fans upon release. This drew unfavorable comparisons to the Tobey Maguire trilogy that came before it. And while Garfield’s comedic gags were appreciated, there was also a perception that the British actor didn’t quite fit the role of the traditionally withdrawn Peter Parker.
However, The Amazing Spider-Man scored a respectable 72% on rotten tomatoes (will open in a new tab). Critics particularly praised the undeniable chemistry between Garfield and Stone (the pair would later begin dating in real life), but the film’s overly familiar plot and uninspired villain were criticized.
Why is The Amazing Spider-Man climbing the Netflix top 10?
It might seem a bit puzzling that a comic book movie that turns 10 next month has suddenly risen up the Netflix most-watched list, but there’s a very good reason why The Amazing Spider-Man is one of streamers’ best movies right now. .
Last year, Spider-Man: No Way Home brought together three generations of webmasters (Maguire, Garfield, and Tom Holland from the MCU), and audiences went crazy for the multiverse movie. It grossed nearly $2 billion at the worldwide box office, received critical acclaim, and audiences literally applauded on screen.
Garfield’s return as Spider-Man has been cited by many as one of the highlights of No Way Home. This is partly because he enjoys some of the film’s best lines, but also because the passage of time has worked very well for his interpretation of the character. After Garfield’s triumphant return, The Amazing Spider-Man has undergone a long overdue re-evaluation and is now finally getting the recognition it deserves.
Of course, The Amazing Spider-Man is by no means a perfect comic book movie, but it has significantly more pros than cons. Garfield and Stone are both excellent, and there are some great scenes with Spider-Man walking around town. Not to mention Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, it’s just a brilliant casting. Overall, this is a very solid comic book movie, and while not a true contender for the best Spider-Man movie, it’s worth revisiting or watching for the first time on Netflix.
There’s even a possibility that we might see more of Garfield’s Spider-Man in the future. After the success of No Way Home Fans call on Sony to greenlight The Amazing Spider-Man 3. While it seems unlikely, there are rumors that Garfield could reappear as part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe. This interconnected franchise includes the Venom films and will expand with films based on Kraven the Hunter and Madame Webb.
