In the late 2000s, TV host couple Robert and Michelle King produced one of the best network dramas to ever grace our airwaves. Good wife. After a decade and change, they once again have one of the most compelling series on TV: the spiritual horror thriller. Evil.
Evil tells about a group of researchers of the supernatural, each of whom has their own opinion about how real the paranormal is. Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katya Herbers) is a forensic psychologist and skeptic, David Acosta (Mike Colter) is an aspiring priest and a total believer, and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) is a tech expert who doesn’t believe in any of it. all. And their employer, by the way, is the Catholic Church.
There are many elements that make Evil so good. This is a true multi-episode TV show in a world filled with long films disguised as television; a fantastic cast led by the charming Gerbers and the very brash Michael Emerson as the main antagonist; and Kings’ sense of humor shines through silly jokes (including a “Pop-Up Book of Terrifying Things” that announces the title of each episode) that balance out the show’s darker theme.
But Evil not just a fresh TV show – it’s legitimately unsettling. Instead of following the path of spiritual terror laid out by Exorcistwhere the horrors of Catholic mythology are clearly real, Evil instead deftly leans towards agonism, rarely giving you a clear answer about whether what you saw was supernatural or just strange. Uncertainty is one of the best flavors of horror. —Pete Wolf

Mike FlanaganDoctor Sleep) has directed several limited horror series for Netflix and is preparing another one soon. midnight club. I heard a lot about his first two, The ghosts of the house on the hill as well as The Haunting of Bly Manorbut midnight mass the only thing I have time for. And let me tell you: this is the rule.
midnight mass The action takes place in an isolated New England town that is deeply Catholic with a strong conservative leaning. When a young man (Zach Gilford) returns home after a tragic incident, he struggles to re-adjust to the community he left behind. Meanwhile, the town’s longtime priest goes missing, and a mysterious young man (Hamish Linklater) arrives in his place. The city is quickly captivated by the young man’s charisma and I’ll go ahead and let you know the rest!
Flanagan lets his projects breathe in a delightful way, leaving room for meaningful monologues for his actors and room for the audience to digest what they consume. It helps that the cast is crammed with great performances, including Flanagan’s longtime collaborator and wife Kate Siegel and Rahul Kohli (I am a zombielisten)) as a Muslim sheriff of a deeply Catholic community. —PV

The FX horror anthology series now has multiple seasons, but I’m here to recommend the first one in particular to make our list of the best new TV shows of 2018. An adaptation of the novel by Dan Simmons, which in turn is a supernatural adaptation. about real events related to Captain Sir John Franklin’s disastrous Arctic expedition in the 1840s, Terror is a tense and meaningful journey to the iciest part of the world and is about a group of people who completely lose it. Featuring stunning performances from Jared Harris, Ciarán Hinds and Tobias Menzies, impeccable tension and intricate sets to die for, Terror is a favorite of Polygon employees for good reason. —PV
Terror available to watch on Hulu.
Young Sang-ho (English)Train to Busan, Psychokinesis) absolutely delivered with this straight-to-Netflix dark fantasy series about some mysterious muscle boys who show up and beat the crap out of random people. Hellish is most interesting when it comes to how people try to rationalize the irrational: the presence of these mysterious life forms gives rise to a cult that believes they are righteous beings sent to punish sinners. The truth, of course, is not so simple. —PV
Hellish available to watch on Netflix.
Spin-off Z-nationfor my money black summer the best zombie show on TV. Shared with John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, One) that directs many episodes, exciting atmosphere black summer takes you right into this zombified world with ground level views of people just trying to survive. My quick suggestion: this is a deeply human zombie show, directed by a very capable filmmaker, with plenty of tense and scary moments to give you what you want from the genre. —PV

Hannibal it’s not just one of the best horror series ever made, it’s one of the best shows ever made. Showrunner Bryan Fuller’s surprisingly violent, poetic and gripping re-imagining of Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Lecter novels takes what could have been the brand’s mechanical cash and instead offers a subversively humane take on a sinister theme.
What is he doing Hannibal so frightening – and beautiful – the way it evokes empathy. Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), the crime profiler at the center of the show, is so good at his job that it scares him. Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) is a psychiatrist he is assigned to work with, not knowing that the good doctor is also a cannibal killer. The push and pull in their relationship as their status quo explodes and resets with shocking regularity is what makes Hannibal thriller from which it is impossible to break away; the poetry of how these people turn into metaphors when they see themselves reflected in violence makes it transcendent. — Joshua Rivera
Hannibal can be watched on Hulu or ad-free on Plex.
Like Hannibal, exorcist expands the popular film franchise in a way that at first glance seems cheap. Exorcist is one of the greatest horror films ever made, equally famous for its many imitators and sequels, most of which can’t compare to the original. But for the few who have seen it, the sequel to the 2016 Fox series exorcist was worthy of the name.
Beautifully filmed and legitimately scary, Jeremy Slater’s sequel doesn’t so much reinvent the wheel as it works to take every possible measure to make the wheel make sense. Each of exorcistTwo seasons mostly focus on the persecution of one family, anchoring the spiritual terror of fathers Thomas Ortega and Marcus Keane (Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels) as they struggle with what evil really looks like. – Jr

French horror series. Marianne This is one of the scariest shows on Netflix since it premiered on the service in 2019. Created by writer/director Samuel Boden, the series follows Emma Larsimon, a self-destructive but successful horror writer who is haunted by memories of Marianne. a vicious witch who claimed the lives of her friends and terrorized her small town. When Marianne, after possessing the body of one of Emma’s friends, returns to haunt her, Emma must return to her hometown to end the witch’s cursed existence once and for all. The real star of the series is Mireille Herbstmeier, whose malevolent gaze and acting are both deeply disturbing and masterfully sinister. — Toussaint Egan

When it comes to sci-fi horror television anthologies, Twilight Zone just impossible to win (sorry, outer limits). The original Rod Serling series, which ran on CBS for five seasons from 1959 to 1964, is filled with iconic stories that speak to the era’s unique spirit of paranoia, uncertainty, and social change. With cultural touchstones such as William Shatner’s A Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, the apocalyptic tragedy There’s Finally Enough Time, the dystopian drama Old Man, and the psychological horror Five Characters in Search of a Way Out. ” is one of my favorite episodes – there is a reason why Twilight Zone has been around for so long: there really is something for every sci-fi and horror fan in this series. -THOSE
Twilight Zone available to watch on Paramount Plus and two seasons available for free with ads on Pluto TV.
