Golden Compass (2007)

Fans of Philip Pullman’s classic fantasy series of novels would probably be better off with the HBO TV adaptation. Two centuries later, Barnabas (Johnny Depp) appears, discovering the world of the 70s, but feeding on revenge. Plus, it gives you Barnabus’ hilarious reactions to 70s pop culture.

This dark fantasy drama is created by Spanish director J.A. Bayona, who has since branched out into huge chapters of the franchise, including Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and the first two episodes of the upcoming Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings. But perhaps his best work is in coming-of-age stories; “Call of the Monster” is about a troubled boy who meets a tree who promises to tell him three stories if Connor tells him one in return. With roots in darker themes, one of which is death, Call of the Monster is a smart, touching fantasy tale.
