Men’s Football Announces Fall 2022 Schedule

HUNTINGTON, West Virginia – On Friday, the Marshall men’s soccer team released the 2022 fall schedule for their first season at the Sun Belt Conference. The Herd will host eight regular season games at Hoops Family Field.

The Thundering Herd will head to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in a row in 2021. Marshall’s schedule includes six contenders with double-digit wins last season and four programs that competed in the NCAA Tournament. Herd’s rivals have collectively won 127 matches in 2021.

Season passes go on sale July 1st. Tickets for individual matches, if any, will be released on August 1st. Season tickets purchased will include one ticket for each men’s and women’s match. More information can be found by clicking here on Marshall men’s football ticket page.

“The schedule for the last few years has been absolutely crazy due to the pandemic and then the conference realignment,” head coach Hurd said. Chris Grassi which is entering its sixth season at the helm. “But we are excited to announce our 2022 schedule and we think it has some great matches for our fans.

“We have eight home games, not counting pre-season, and we have some first-class matches for our fans to enjoy. Our goal, as always, is to win the national championship and we feel our schedule for 2022 gives us the perfect opportunity to do so. do it while we perform. We can’t wait to see you at Hoops Family Field on the 22nd. Go Herd!”

Marshall starts the year with three exhibition matches, one at home and two away. The first is the Rio Grande road race (August 12). The Red Storm won the conference championship and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in 2021. The Herd would then play Radford at home (August 14) in the final away exhibition match against Maryland (August 19). The Terrapins also made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2021.

The regular season will officially begin at Hoops Family Field on August 25 against VCU at 7:15 pm. Marshall’s other non-conference home games are against Pittsburgh (September 2), Pacific (September 11), and Robert Morris (October 4). ). Pitt won 13 games last season and his season ended in the NCAA quarterfinals where Notre Dame lost 4-2 on penalties.

The Herd’s non-conference away matches will take place in Butler (August 29), Cleveland (September 7) and Wright (October 26). Cleveland State won 10 events and lost to Oakland in the 2021 Horizon League Championship.

Marshall’s first season at the Sun Belt will feature several familiar teams that Herd has faced many times in the past. Kentucky, South Carolina and Old Dominion left Conference USA to join the Sun Belt this season. Coastal Carolina and West Virginia are also in the Sun Belt after joining C-USA as a member of the men’s soccer team last season. The Chanticleers were already in the Sun Belt but are now returning with their men’s football program as the league brought back the sport this season with more members. Georgia State and Georgia South return to the Sun Belt after playing in the Mid-American Conference, and James Madison transfers from the Colonial Athletic Association.

The Herd kicks off its 2022 Sun Belt promotion on the road in Kentucky on September 16th. The other road conference matches are in Coastal Carolina (September 30), South Carolina (October 8), and Georgia State (October 19). Kentucky won the 2021 Conference U.S. Championship and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to 8th seed Clemson. Georgia State won 13 games a year ago and defeated Charlotte in the NCAA Tournament before losing to #3 seed Georgetown.

Marshall’s first home conference will be held against WVU on September 24 at Hoops Family Field. The two state rivals met last season in Huntington with a record crowd of 3,033. The fans enjoyed a great match as the teams played to an exciting 2-2 draw. Both teams were in the top 25 at the end of the season. The Mountaineers lost 3rd-seeded Georgetown 4-1 on PC in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last season.

Herd’s other home conference games will take place against Old Dominion (October 15), Georgia Southern (October 23) and James Madison (November 1) to close out the regular season. JMU won 11 matches in 2021.

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is scheduled for November 14-20, the venue will be determined later.

Marshall will be introducing a few new faces this fall, but he seems to have a strong lineup. The Herd won the College Spring League championship back in April with a 2-1 win over Bowling Green. Vinicius Fernandez was named MVP and Oliver Semmle received the Golden Glove award. Other key herd players this season are Milo Yosef, Collin Mociunas, Ibrahima Diop, Gabriel Alves, Joao SouzaAlex Ageti as well as Mohammed Seydoux.
