In an interview with Netflix TudumSchwab has made it clear that the series is not about Juliet’s or Calliope’s sexuality, but about “the fact that there are systems in place on both sides”.

She continued, “This is about family indoctrination. We have these two families, and they each have trench systems that are thousands of years old. Who are you supposed to be? What is your pride, your duty, your honor?

Schwab also spoke about her transition from writing novels and short stories to TV series, saying, “I’m so used to controlling the books. When you write a novel, you kind of play God, you are one voice.

“But when you start working on a TV show, everyone has a voice and a vision, and it’s about making much more complex music that may not sound like the one that’s in my head, but is also a song that others people enjoy.”
