Here are the most watched Amazon Prime video series of the past 2 years: how they stack up against Netflix

e-commerce titanium Amazon.com Inc. AMZN launched its first original series in 2013 while working to expand its Amazon Prime Video streaming platform. The video streaming platform dates back to 2006 and is a membership perk for those who pay for Amazon Prime.

Latest data from Hollywood Reporter shows which series on Amazon Prime Video have been the most watched in the past two years.

What happened: Over the past two years, Amazon has focused on adapting best-selling novels as TV series for its Prime Video platform, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Three of the company’s biggest hits, Reacher, The Wheel of Time, and The Boys, are based on books. Other Prime Video hits, including “Bosch” and “Jack Ryan,” are also based on bestselling stories.

According to data from Nielsen NLSN used in the report, the most popular series on Amazon Prime Video over the past two years were as follows:

  • Reacher: 5.76 billion minutes
  • “Wheel of Time”: 4.91 billion minutes
  • Season of The Boys: 4.8 billion minutes
  • The Hunters: 4.58 billion minutes

To put the numbers in perspective, Netflix Inc NFLKS shared in November his 10 most watched shows of all time. Among the series of the last two years, here are the best English-language shows:

  • Bridgerton Season 1: 37.5 billion minutes
  • The first season of The Witcher: 32.5 billion minutes
  • “Maid”: 28.1 billion minutes
  • “You” season 3: 28.1 billion minutes

Netflix statistics do not include the recently released fourth season of Stranger Things, which debuted on the streaming platform, or the second season of Bridgerton.

The Netflix numbers are based on the fact that the company publishes millions of hours watched.

Amazon Prime is still far behind hit shows from Netflix, with many of the original hits on Netflix delivering in the week of premiere what the best Amazon Prime Video show can release in a month or more.

Why is it important: Amazon has bet big on another best-selling novel, and the long-awaited The Lord of the Rings will be adapted into a TV series. The premiere of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is scheduled for September 2, 2022.

Films based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit have grossed over $1.8 billion domestically.

The Amazon show has been ranked as the second most anticipated new series of 2022 by IMDb. The second season of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is already in development.

Amazon Prime Video has always been a perk of the company’s subscription service, which includes perks such as free two-day shipping.

Amazon has raised the price of its Prime membership from $12.99 to $14.99 per month and from $119 to $139 per year.

With dozens of streaming platforms to choose from, new popular shows from Amazon Prime Video can help justify a Prime membership over some others that don’t have the benefits of e-commerce.

AMZN Price Action: Amazon shares rose 2.47% to $106.22 on Friday.
