The Indiana Pacers had high hopes for the 2021-22 NBA season after hiring coach Rick Carlyle last offseason. With solid veteran talent in every position, it felt like they could compete even as the Eastern Conference became increasingly competitive.

It didn’t take long for the Pacers to unravel. T.J. Warren never appeared in any games due to a stress fracture in his foot. With one of the tightest schedules in the NBA to start the season, a 1-6 start turned into an avalanche as more injuries began to pile up.

It was clear that the Pacers had no chance of recovering from the 19-37 record they held at the time of the mid-season trade deadline. The circumstances were clear; changes were needed. They didn’t have the right franchise cornerstone to build on, and the double big player roster with Domantas Sabonis and Miles Turner was long overdue for breaking up.

Sabonis is now a member of the Sacramento Kings, and the Pacers have Tyrese Haliburton at the center of their recovery efforts. Indiana will need to add more young building blocks to create a foundation that can turn into a real threat. The main mechanism they have is the 6th overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft.

One prospect that stands out as an intriguing option for the Pacers is Jaden Ivey. The 6-foot-4 guard played two seasons with Purdue and is finishing the 2021-22 season averaging 17.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

“If I get the chance, I would definitely be very happy because of my upbringing,” Ivey said of the Pacers draft opportunity. Bleacher Report Q&A. “Being an Indiana kid, spending your whole life in Indiana, so that would be amazing…”

NBA DRAFT LATEST AND TRADE RUMBLE: Indiana Pacers among teams in talks to trade for Jaden Ivey

Speaking to the NBA Analysis Network, a former league executive expressed his belief that the Pacers should make a trade to get Ivey, likening the situation to the Dallas Mavericks’ attempted trade for Luka Doncic in the 2018 NBA Draft.

“I’m not comparing two players when I say this, just situations. Take Mavs for example, when they traded a few spots from the 5th pick to get Luca. Dallas took advantage of a bad season they weren’t used to and made the most of it by trading to get their boyfriend. The Pacers love to compete. They are used to being a perpetual playoff team. They have to do everything they can to move up a couple of spots to get their boyfriend.”

The Pacers were tied with potential contenders for the fourth overall pick, which is held by the Kings. The specifics of a potential trade package to implement could be difficult to understand given Sacramento’s desire to acquire a win-win player that matches their roster centered around De’Aaron Fox and Sabonis.

Perhaps the Indiana Pacers could take a page from the Dallas Mavericks book and send in a future first-round pick to encourage the Sacramento Kings to make a deal? They could get creative with the #6 overall pick and future pick to get a key contributor. Perhaps the Pacers can see the Kings’ interest in Chris Duarte as another option.
