Off the court, however, teams are gearing up for a different type of competition: the 2022 NBA Draft is approaching, giving many teams the best chance to improve their record and compete for a spot in next year’s Finals.
Auburn’s Jabari Smith Jr., Duke’s Paolo Banchero and Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren were top picks this year. Who will take the top spot overall is anyone’s guess, but storylines and consensus are starting to form around the top picks in the draft.

2022 NBA Draft Selection Order
For the second year in a row, the Magic have the top five in the lottery (selecting Jalen Suggs fifth overall in the 2021 NBA draft). Orlando, who had a second-worst record of 22-60, won the 2022 lottery by 14 percent, tied for the best odds with the Rockets and Pistons.
This is the team’s first overall pick since 2004 when it selected Dwight Howard.
Behind the Magic in the NBA draft is the Thunder with the fourth-worst record in the league (24-58). The Rockets (20-62), Kings (30-52), and Pistons (23-59) round out the top five, respectively.
The teams with the most draft picks this year are the Spurs and the Timberwolves. San Antonio has three first round picks and the 38th overall pick, while Minnesota has the 19th overall pick and three second round picks. Four teams are out of draft this year: the Lakers, Suns, Jazz, and Nets (following Brooklyn’s decision to delay the 76ers’ first-round acquisition until the 2023 NBA draft).
